Keep an eye out for the Spotted Lanternfly! It is an extremely invasive species that is a danger to our economy. The Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) feeds on sap from a myriad of plants. The feeding stresses the plants causing damage and sometimes death. The SLF has a strong preference for those plants that are important to PA’s economy including grapevines, maples, black walnut, birch, and willow A study conducted in 2019 estimated that spotted lanternfly could cost PA’s economy $324 million per year.
Currently, The Spotted Lanternfly has been found in 34 different counties in PA since 2014 and those counties have been placed under a quarantine to stop the spread of the damaging insect. As the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture does its best to eradicate the infestation, you can visit the following website to see how to do your part.: https://www.agriculture.pa.gov/.../spo.../Pages/default.aspx
