Commercial Property Remediation

Northern Virginia

A commercial property in northern Virginia with a large shopping center was identified for participation in the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) Voluntary Remediation Program (VRP) following the discovery of chlorinated solvents, primarily tetrachloroethene (PCE), in groundwater in the vicinity of a former dry cleaner tenant space. An application to participate in the VRP was prepared, and the property was subsequently accepted into the program.

Project Highlights

Site characterization activities:
  • Source investigation completed in the vicinity of the suspected release point, included an earth resistivity geophysical survey, several rounds of monitoring well installations and groundwater monitoring, aquifer testing, collection of sub-slab and near-slab soil gas samples, borehole geophysics, installation of FLUTe non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) detectors, and a fracture trace analysis
  • Human health risk assessment performed
  • A Remedial Action Plan (RAP) was subsequently prepared and approved by the VDEQ
