Slab Cabin Run

Centre County, Pennsylvania

This project contributed to the reduction of stream bank erosion in Slab Cabin Run in and below Millbrook Marsh through a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protections Growing Greener grant.

As part of the project, stream stabilization measures also provided in-stream habitat improvement. Additionally, the project was designed to provide additional water quality benefits by reducing sediment loadings from developed areas upstream on Slab Cabin Run and Thompson Run by reducing bank erosion and providing conveyance channels for bankfull events to deposit part of their sediment loads on the floodplain.

Project Highlights

  • Completion of detailed plans, specifications and hydrologic and hydraulic analysis to ensure project success
  • Evaluation of alternatives and associated cost estimates identified the best approach that met the project need and funding
  • Extensive community coordination with local environmental organizations, and county and township planning agencies to ensure protection of the watershed and the educational and research facility, Millbrook Marsh
  • Construction support contributed to the long term success of the project as the installed structures remained intact and continued to reconnect stream flows to the adjacent floorplan wetlands during high flows.
  • The project serves to provide educational benefits through the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center programming
