Confidential Client

Bainbridge, PA

ARM geotechnical engineers and geophysicists assisted a confidential client and their contractors with various phases of the design and construction for the expansion of their soybean processing facilities. Karst conditions including soft soils, pinnacled bedrock and potential sinkholes complicated the design and construction of each facility.

Project Highlights

  • Project geotechnical engineer for the design and construction of four 500,000-bushel grain silos with diameters as great as 106 feet and heights as great as 91 feet
  • A large hopper bin and a new oil tank were also included
  • Programmed a series of test borings, an electrical resistivity survey and laboratory tests
  • Assisted in oil tank engineering at the crest of a steep slope, determined the appropriate set-back distance to provide a sufficient factor of safety against slope failure
  • Provided technical specifications for a compaction grouting program designed to limit settlement of the large grain silos and to discourage sinkhole development
  • During the construction phase, provided guidance to client and the contractors during the grouting program and provided quality assurance testing of the grout and cast-in-place concrete
