Confidential Client
AST CQA, Dye Testing & Certification

Marshall County, West Virginia

Temporary ASTs require minimal earthwork, reduce the need for frac tanks, and can be erected or dismantled in a matter of days. AST regulations vary significantly by state, and since 2014, West Virginia has been enforcing some of the most stringent AST requirements found in the Marcellus Shale region. When one area owner/operator, a confidential WV-based client, planned to install a 10,000-bbl AST for their hydraulic fracturing operations, they reached out to ARM’s Construction-Phase Services Group to ensure that the AST was installed in a safe, efficient, and compliant manner.

Project Highlights

  • Full-time construction quality assurance (CQA) oversight during tank installation
  • Provided input at daily safety meetings, monitored geosynthetics deployment, inspected geomembranes for defects and damages, observed geomembrane seam testing, documented the installation effort, and communicated daily progress with client representatives and project managers
  • Following installation, the AST was filled with freshwater for hydrostatic testing. ARM used fluorescent green dye to serve as a visual aid in detecting leaks from the primary containment, and monitored the tank throughout the 24-hour testing period
  • Hydrostatic testing, certified by a qualified individual, prior to service
  • Completed an AST “Fit for Service” certification for submittal to the WVDEP
