EDF Renewable Energy -

2018 Solar Builder Silver Project of the Year

Annapolis Maryland

ARM was hired EDF Renewables, ARM provided geotechnical, electrical, structural and civil engineering services for the largest landfill solar project in North America at the time. Located in Annapolis, MD, the award winning 18 MW Annapolis Landfill Solar Project comprised approximately 55,000 solar panels installed over 80 acres of a geosynthetic capped landfill. ARM’s engineers contributed to a design that had to overcome major challenges related to landfill settlement, methane collections, and special electrical design requirements to reduce the potential for fire risk.

Project Highlights

  • Coordinating with Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) and EDF to upgrade the design by increasing the solar module wattage and by optimizing the racking and medium voltage equipment on all the sites.
  • To support the equipment loads, and to ensure the preservation of the geotechnical landfill geomembrane integrity, ARM specially designed the foundations and racking systems utilizing a pre-cast ballasted racking system.
  • As the Engineer of Record, ARM also coordinated with the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and local municipality, performed production and shading analyses, electrical, geotechnical and civil site inspections, arc-flash studies, short-circuit studies, voltage drop calculations and much more.
